Starting as a tradie or contractor in Australia

Trades have licence and safety requirements that vary by state. Get the licence right before you advertise or take deposits.

1. Check your trade licence

Electrical, plumbing, gasfitting, building, air-conditioning and many other trades need a state licence or registration. Use ABLIS filtered to your trade and state — do not rely on word of mouth.

2. White card and site requirements

Construction sites usually require a general construction induction card (white card). Some sites also need site-specific inductions, SWMS (safe work method statements) and evidence of insurance.

3. Insurance for trades

  • Public liability (often $10–20 million for commercial work).
  • Tools and equipment.
  • Income protection or trauma cover (personal choice).
  • Workers’ compensation if you employ anyone.
  • Home warranty / builders warranty where your state requires it for residential building work.

4. ABN, GST and quoting

Most tradies need an ABN. If turnover will hit $75,000, register for GST and quote GST-inclusive or clearly show GST. Keep written quotes with scope, variations and payment terms.

Australian Business Register — Apply for an ABN

5. Hiring apprentices or labourers

If you hire, you need PAYG withholding, super and the correct award rates. Use Fair Work tools before you set wages.

Heads upLicence rules are state-specific. Always confirm with your state regulator and ABLIS.
